Sentinel-5P Total Column CH4 - WFMD

This map is based on OPERATIONAL Sentinel-5P L2 products.

About Total Column CH4 - WFMD

This online platform uses data from the Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite and shows the averaged methane concentrations across the globe — using weekly averaged maps.

The methane map shown here is measured by the Tropomi instrument on the Sentinel 5 Precursor satellite and processed using the University of Bremen's Weighting Function Modified DOAS (WFM-DOAS) v1.8 algorithm. More information on the Tropomi CH4-WFMD measurements and quality assessment can be found in the Algorithm Theoretical Baseline Document.

Data gaps are visible based on the product quality filtering. For example, data over the ocean is typically limited to specific situations such as sun-glint or special sea-ice conditions, which ensure sufficient reflectivity for accurate methane retrieval.

About this S5P-PAL map

The maps shown on this site have been based on Sentinel-5P Methane Level-2 products retrieved using the University of Bremen's WFMD v1.8 algorithm, available from the Centre for Environmental Data Analysis, with more recent data available from the University of Bremen website. The readme file of this product can be found here.

The Tropomi CH4-WFMD measurements are mapped on a fixed latitude-longitude grid of 4096 x 8192 pixels. The grid is turned into an EPSG:4326 geotiff file using the appropriate color scale, which is again turned into an EPSG:3857 tile map.

The maps and underlying Level-3 gridded data files were generated by S5P-PAL. The Level-3 data can be downloaded from the S5P-PAL Data Portal, or directly via the download button below the map.
